Summary


This looping network of 19 miles is specifically designed for the recreational ATV rider. Advanced riders will find challenges in the narrow and twisting trails, while others will find trails that are wide and inviting. Visitors to the area enjoy panoramic vistas, spectacular mountain laurel blooms in season, and relief from the hot summer sun under the shady forest canopy.

FS Regulation

• Vehicles must be less than 50 inches wide and weigh no more than 1,500 pounds (unloaded dry weight). • No operators under age 12 allowed on any vehicle per Forest Supervisor’s Order. • Only four wheel ATV's, motorcycles, and bicycles permitted on designated trails. • Operators between the age of 12 and 16 must be supervised by an adult, and on an appropriately sized vehicle per Virginia State Law. • Only one rider/operator per vehicle at one time unless ATV is manufactured for multiple passengers. • Ope

Special recreation permit required. Permits cannot be purchased on site; permits must be purchased from local vendors. Permits available include: $5 per operator per day. $12 three-day consecutive pass per operator. $30 annual permit. America the Beautiful Senior and Access Pass discounts do not apply.

Directions

From Lynchburg, VA:  Follow VA 130 West towards the Blue Ridge Parkway. Just after crossing under the Blue Ridge Parkway, Turn right onto FR 319 to the Terrapin Trailhead parking lot. The Rattlesnake Trailhead Parking is another 1 mile west on VA Route 130, then right onto FR 564. Located at the intersection of Blue Ridge Parkway and Elon Road, Monroe, VA 24574 From Buena Vista, VA: Follow US 501 South. Continue on US 501 to the intersection with VA 130 East at the Snowden Power Plant on the James River.
